Lazy Days of Summer
Remember recess, and how thrilling it was to blast out of class and run and swing and cross the monkey bars with abandon? Remember having to get your chores done so you could go out and play? And surely you recall that last day of the school year, when the bell rang and you were jazzed for a summer of fun and looking forward to the annual family vacation. I’m guessing it’s been a while since you’ve gone out to play or taken recess. Maybe it’s time to step away from the desk, unplug from the busyness, and take a vacation — even in these challenging times, or perhaps especially in these challenging times.
Celebrated Living’s perennial favorite Readers’ Choice Platinum List highlights your discerning selections of the best hotels, golf courses, spas, and cruises, and gives more than 200 ideas for summer retreats.
Inspired by our Platinum List, I recently enjoyed a family vacation at the beach. Two of my younger nieces, Sara and Danielle, had never seen the ocean before, and the week with family was definitely the stuff that memories are made of. We rode bikes, swam, and walked on the beach for miles. Simple, but priceless.
Along those lines, frequent contributor Ken McAlpine has penned a relevant new book, perfect for a summertime read. Islands Apart details his search for a simpler life and takes readers to California’s Channel Islands and beyond for some stargazing and soul searching. Ken provides several “retro” vacation ideas on page 18 of our summer magazine. And check out Ken’s “Seascapes” article for a look at some stunning underwater photography.
Our website, celebratedliving.com, is becoming quite an extension of the magazine you now hold in your hands. There you’ll find all of our content in digital form, plus exclusive behind-the-scenes images and insight on the underwater photography story, the editors’ choices for the Platinum List, a cool compilation of the entire Platinum List rankings in a downloadable pdf form, and more.
How could you not notice that Charlize Theron graces our cover and celebrity feature story? Not long ago, I had the pleasure of attending an AFI Dallas International Film Festival screening of Charlize’s movie The Burning Plain, and met writer and director Guillermo Arriaga at a post-screening Q&A. It was fascinating to get an idea of what went into creating the multilayered, complex movie and to hear why he felt Charlize was a must for the project. Read more about Charlize beginning on page 30.
Here’s hoping that you can treat yourself to some lazy days this summer. From the opening page on hammocks to the back page on summer ales, we’ve provided you with plenty of fodder for fun. Now let’s get our chores done so we can go out and play!
